Chapter Six
The lane had snowdrifts on one side so high it was almost impossible to see the hedge, and beyond the hedge lay a white patchwork quilt of snow covered fields. On the other side of the lane, the snow had been cleared away from the six-foot high back wall that ran the whole length of the lane. All the pedestrian gates and garage doors were cleared of snow and it was banked up against the wall. The sky was beginning to get bright and the snow had lost its bluie glow.
The lonely group of three little friends made their way to the bottom of the lane, where they found some cardboard boxes and crawled in under one of them and huddled together to keep warm. Sissy and Sunny were so exhausted they soon fell asleep, but Luggie was wide awake and worried about the fear he had of being watched all the time.
This is no time for sleeping, thought Luggie to himself, I will stay awake and keep watch, you just do not know what is out there hiding in the snow.
But good intentions are not the same as actually doing, and he did not remember nodding off to sleep, but all three were woken up by the sound of sniffing and whimpering.
When Luggie opened his eyes he looked straight into the face of the friendliest Labrador ever.
Hello, said the lovely golden yellow dog, sorry if I disturbed you, you are all new around here arenât you? She asked.
Yes, yawned a very sleepy Luggie, and we are all lost too.
Oh dear, said the Labrador, that is terrible, do you have any idea where you live?
No, replied Luggie, and we are also being followed.
No way, said the Labrador, wide eyed and in astonishment.
Yes, and I donât know who it is or what it is.
You mean you havenât seen them or it or what it is?
No, replied Luggie again, but I just know there is something out there after us.
The big friendly dog remained silent for a moment and then looked at Luggie in a strange way.
Why, whatâs wrong, asked Luggie?
No, nothings wrong, said the big kind dog.
She thought for a moment, and then said, how old are you?
How old am I? Replied a bewildered Luggie, what do you mean, how old am I? Are you trying to change the subject?
No, no, said the dog, of course not.
Iâm a few months old, said Luggie, why do you ask?
I see, said the Labrador deep in thought, then she said, you are probably about to come of age and learn about some of the secrets of the universe.
Luggies bottom jaw dropped open. His mother never mentioned anything about the universe.
You mean Iâm going to be a space dog? He said all excited about the prospect of travelling in a rocket and he secretly hoped JJ would be at the controls.
No, said the Labrador, Iâm afraid not quite. By the way, my names Sasha, whatâs yours?
Mr. Luggie Tatters, Luggie said very proudly.
Oooooh, said Sasha, how posh, it must be wonderful to be so special as to be given such a terrific name.
